Geometric morphometrics of vole (Microtus californicus) dentition as a new paleoclimate proxy: Shape change along geographic and climatic clines
نویسنده
چکیده
Quaternary small-mammal fossils are widespread and have served as valuable paleoclimatic proxies through niche-modeling or otherwise relating presence-absence data to climatic data. This paper examines the potential for a new, more resolved type of paleoclimate proxy in the form of Microtus tooth shape, using an abundant California species, Microtus californicus. Geometric morphometrics and partial least squares analyses are used to find geographic signals in the shape of the first lower molar (m1) of this species. M. californicus m1s are relatively straight in the northwest, cooler, moister portion of California and more curved in the southeast, hotter, drier portion of the state. These tooth shape changes may be a result of selection related to different vegetation ultimately controlled by climate, and therefore diet, within the species’ range. The pattern in m1 shape persists when phylogeographic hypotheses are taken into account, indicating that the climate signal is significant independent of intraspecific groupings. This method adds an important new tool to the suite of proxies available to reconstruct past climates at fine spatiotemporal scales and reveals a geographic/climatic signal that correlates with morphological variation across the range of M. californicus. 2009 Elsevier Ltd and INQUA. Identifying California Microtus species using geometric morphometrics documents Quaternary geographic range contractions
Paleontology can provide a deep-time dimension to observations about recent reactions of small mammals to climate change. Obtaining this perspective for voles (Microtus), a common and important constituent of North American mammal communities, has been difficult because species identification based on their dental remains is problematic. Here I demonstrate that geometric morphometrics and discr...
متن کاملHigh Levels of Gene Flow in the California Vole (microtus Californicus) Are Consistent across Spatial Scales
—Gene flow links the genetic and demographic structures of species. Despite the fact that similar genetic and demographic patterns shape both local population structure and regional phylogeography, the 2 levels of population connectivity are rarely studied simultaneously. Here, we studied gene flow in the California vole (Microtus californicus), a small-bodied rodent with limited vagility but h...
متن کاملIsla Vista virus: a genetically novel hantavirus of the California vole Microtus californicus.
Prospect Hill virus (PH) was isolated from a meadow vole (Microtus pennsylvanicus) in 1982, and much of its genome has been sequenced. Hantaviruses of other New World microtine rodents have not been genetically characterized. We show that another Microtus species (the California vole M. californicus) from the United States is host to a genetically distinct PH-like hantavirus, Isla Vista virus (...
متن کاملMorphometric Differences among Root Vole (muridae: Microtus Oeconomus) Populations in Hungary
Isolated by hundreds of kilometers from the main population, the southernmost populations of root voles (Microtus oeconomus) are vulnerable to extinction in Hungary. Due to restrictions imposed by their protected status, only a limited number of surveys have been conducted to assess the status of the Hungarian populations. Our goal was to understand the historical relationship between Hungarian...
متن کاملMorphometric shape analysis using learning vector quantization neural networks — an example distinguishing two microtine vole species
Closely related species may be very difficult to distinguish morphologically, yet sometimes morphology is the only reasonable possibility for taxonomic classification. Here we present learning-vector-quantization artificial neural networks as a powerful tool to classify specimens on the basis of geometric morphometric shape measurements. As an example, we trained a neural network to distinguish...
